The Importance of Proper Oral Care

Taking care of our teeth is something we all know we should do, but for most people, it's such an ingrained habit that we tend to cut corners. However, it's important to keep your oral hygiene skills sharp to cut back on plaque collecting on your teeth and gums. In this post, find out how plaque builds up in your mouth and what you can do to keep it at bay. Our dentists, Dr. Marvin Olim and Dr. Sarah Olim can help you keep great oral health.

What is plaque?

Plaque is a sticky, clear film made up of your saliva, the foods and drinks you consume, and bacteria. It starts building up on your teeth between 4 and 12 hours after you clean your teeth; untouched plaque can quickly lead to gum disease and tooth decay. Brushing and flossing break up this film, but only temporarily, which is why your Katy dentist recommends that all patients brush at least twice a day and floss once to interrupt the accumulation of plaque.

How can I take care of my teeth?

Optimize your oral hygiene routine at home by taking stock of how you can improve. Make sure your toothbrush is up-to-date; your Katy dentist recommends that everyone replace their toothbrush three to four times a year. You should also check to make sure you're only using soft-bristled toothbrushes and non-abrasive toothpaste to avoid damaging your enamel or gum tissue. Each time you brush - at least twice a day and ideally after each meal - should be for two full minutes. Flossing only needs to be done once a day and many people find that using the flossing picks, or "swords," is easier and more comfortable than the string.

By brushing and flossing your teeth daily, as well as visiting Olim and Associates in Katy, Texas, you're significantly reducing the likelihood of needing a cavity filled or a root canal to repair the damage left by decay.
